Volunteering is My Calling

“During the hard time of isolation and social distancing, we were those who connected our beneficiaries to the outside world and filled them with hope”.

Salome Dolidze
Volunteer
Georgia Red Cross Society – Batumi Branch

I have been a member of the Red Cross team for 3 years. In general, to be a volunteer and to do something useful for the community is my calling. It gives me the strength to strive for self-development and success.

To summarize my volunteering during the pandemic, the most valuable thing that pandemic work has given me is the warmth and gratitude of the elderly. Each word of gratitude from them inspired me to keep working even harder and with more enthusiasm.

Among our beneficiaries, there was one elderly bedridden woman who was not able to move, to go outside. For her, each of our visits was a relief. We connected her with the outside world and filled her with hope.

As for my emotions, yes, at the beginning I was confused, and even scared, but it was a temporary reaction. Soon, I could concentrate on my daily tasks and the field work gradually became easier.

It is important that the Red Cross provided us with basic trainings and accurate instructions on how to behave during a pandemic. This kind of preparation also had a good effect on our efficiency and engagement in the field work.
